Graduate Web Design & Art Critique Seminar
Prof. Devin Kerr (lecture)
Prof. Cara Thompson (critique seminar)
SUNY Oswego (OSU), Fall Semester 2008
I took the Graduate Web Design course that is offered by the Art Department at SUNY Oswego as part of my HCI degree in fulfillment of a Graphic Design elective. The course was accompanied by a Graduate Art Critique Seminar.
Below, you can find the set of class work, exercises, projects, and experimental code that I prepared for this class. A more ellaborate presentation of my learning progress can be found in the blog that I maintained throughout the class.

Exercises
- Exercise 1: A simple HTML Exercise.
This is an exercise in simple HTML and tables. The task was to create three pages that look fairly alike and are structured by tables. As content, we were asked to answer a few web- and HTML-related questions and link to some websites. [link] - Exercise 2: Some easy GIFs and grafics.
This exercise required some photoshopping and the use of some other Adobe tools. We were asked to create a simple GIF animation and a header image, called a masthead. [animation || masthead] - Exercise 3: An excercise in image optimization and slicing.
For this exercise, we were asked to experiment with different image formats and to incorporate them into some simple HTML code. Also, we used Photoshop and Illustrator to create website layouts, then slice them, and convert the layouts into some findamental HTML, with roll over effects and all. [link] - Exercise 4: CSS and DIV Arrangement.
The task was to design one HTML page with a header, a text content box and an image box. All three are to be DIV tags and ought to be arranged using mere CSS. It was important to set the positioning to absolute to allow the DIV tags to be arranged freely. [link]

Projects
- Project 1: A simple website featuring: Me!
We had to design a five simple HTML pages, designed using tables, tables and CSS, and CSS only for page layout. The main focus was to create appropriate imagery to make the page design looks like made from one piece. [link] - Project 2: HCI Program Website Redesign Proposal
The task was to design a proposal website for a redesign of the HCI MA Program website. The content was supposed to consist of various HCI prototyping documents, showing the basic methodology to design such a proposal. Our proposal consists of two prototypes employing different design and interaction strategies. A joint proposal has been formulated on the basis of these two prototypes. [link] - Project 3: HCI Program Website Redesign
Project 3 entailed producing an actual implementation of a website for the HCI MA Program. After HCI methodology in Project 2 has established two prototype alternatives, this project was concerned with implementing a high fidelity version of said prototypes. The result has been tested with Firefox, IE, Operah, Chrome, and Safari, as well as on Windows, Mac OS, Solaris, and Linux/Unix. A Mobile Phone version has been designed, too, so check it out on your handheld device. [link] - HCI Project
HCI Students in this class were required to complete a Web Design related project using HCI methodology. We hence chose a Redesign Project of a web site that has some design issues. Here is the link to the redesign proposal and the completed redesign.

Miscellaneous
- Critical Analysis Comparing two Web Sites.
A web site has been designed that features a critical comparison of two web pages. The focus was on identifying pitfalls and successes in the site's design and to create a web site that communicates the findings. [link] - Blog: My class blog to accompany my work portfolio. [link]
